Looking for X

Khyber and her family live in creeping poverty. Her mother has part time work but must spend her money and time caring for her autistic twins. Khyber does not do well at school, because she cannot dress as well, nor get the food she needs to keep up her strength, and often her time at night is taken with caring for her brothers. She is friendly with the street people, and takes a sandwich each day to one of them called X. She and her family survive on soup, and her mother has many ways of making the soup to sustain her family. The soup even has become a ritual within the family and is contrasted with the food eaten at a local restaurant.
