Burping Bertha

When Bertha finds that her accidental burps can knock things over, she asks a boy at school to teach her how to burp to order. After lots of practice her burping becomes so professional that she can knock apples off trees, deflect footballs and send her teacher’s glasses flying. The headmistress is so impressed that she asks Bertha to perform at the school Christmas concert. From then on Bertha’s fame is assured. The press and television take up her story and record and film offers flood in. But burping can be a dangerous skill. Her plane crashes one night, and the experts say that some kind of explosion had torn a hole in it! Even so, some people reckon that she survived the crash, and now lives a quiet (burping) life in secret somewhere.

Michael Rosen

Michael J. Rosen is an acclaimed author, editor and illustrator of some forty books for both adults and young people. Many are inspired by his lifelong experience with animals; he studied Zoology at university, has worked as a dog trainer and founded a granting programme to support animal welfare organizations. He says of ChaseR, When I moved from the major city where I’d lived most of my life to a rural community, the changes were monumental. And I often thought, What if I hadn’t actually chosen to live here? I wrote this novel not only to imagine this new way of life from a teenage point of view, but also to consider the complicated (and always teetering) balance we try to achieve, living, as we all do, amid an ever-diminishing natural world. Michael J. Rosen lives in Ohio, USA.
