My Sixteenth Summer

Charlie Sullivan is good at being fifteen. She satisfies all of the requirements: she’s rude and surly, and has a smart mouth.

On a school history excursion to the local cemetery, she discovers that Dan Ryan, the local bushranger, used to hide from the troopers in the caves on her father’s farm.

This story touches on serious issues about growing up in the country and coping with death. However, Charlie’s irreverent take on life prevents her from getting too down in the dumps, despite what the weird School Counsellor, Mr Bolitho, writes about her in his file. Charlie wonders why they have such weird people trying to stop other people from being weird.

Christine Wenke

Chris Wenke was raised on a farm in central New South Wales. She has spent most of her working life doing administrative work in schools. She is married with two sons and lives in Albury on the NSW/Victorian border. Her life and experience in schools have given her an intuitive understanding of adolescent attitudes and outlook, which comes across strongly in her novel. She also has an abiding interest in local history, and her novel includes a sub-plot loosely based on the exploits of the bushranger Ben Hall in the country around Forbes, NSW. Her unpublished short story, The Tree was shortlisted for the Glen Eira My Brother Jack Prize, and was highly commended at the Henry Lawson Festival. My Sixteenth Summer is her first novel to be published. Her second novel Willa’s Secret is due for release as a Takeaways in July 2004 and is also to be published by Lothian Books.
