Across the Wall: Tales of the Old Kingdom and Beyo

Nicholas Sayre will do anything to get across the wall, back to the Old Kingdom. Thoughts of Lirael and Sam haunt his dreams. But here in Ancelstierre the charter is dormant, and before Nick can re-join his friends he must face one of the rarest and most dangerous of the Free Magic creatures: a creature that seems to draw power from Nicholas himself.

‘Nicholas Sayre and the Creature in the Case’ opens this superb collection of short stories from Garth Nix, that range from classic fantasy to a gritty urban version of Hansel and Gretel, and an unusual take on the role of nature in matters of the heart.

Across the Wall displays the depth and versatility that have made Garth Nix one of today’s leading fantasy writers, and a New York Times bestseller.

Garth Nix

Garth Nix was born in Melbourne on a Saturday, and got married on a Saturday to his publisher wife, Anna. So Saturday is a good day. He used to write on a Sunday, because over the years he had a number of day jobs – as bookseller, editor, PR consultant, literary agent – that nearly always started on a Monday (and far too early). Tuesday often brings luck – like the news that Abhorsen had hit The New York Times best-seller list. When Garth was in the Australian Army Reserve, Wednesday was training night. Thursday is memorable, because that’s when his son, Tom, was born. Now that Garth is a full-time writer, Friday is less important than it used to be as the end of the working week. On any day, Garth may generally be found near Coogee Beach, in Sydney, where he and his family live.
