Bath Monster
The young narrator starts off with one of the great opening lines: “It’s true: I stink!” And what follows is a funny story about trying to find a cure for her fear of bathtime-but there is simply no substitute for taking a deep breath and jumping in.
John Danalis based this story on the experience of a five year old friend Andrea, who, like his own brother, was born hearing impaired. When she was given a supersonic hearing aid, suddenly sounds that were ordinary to others became terrifying to her-and bathtime was the worst time of the day. She was so frightened by the sound of the water gurgling down the plughole that she would rip her hearing aid out! The doctors said that unless she was particularly dirty, she could have just one bath a week until she got used to the sound.
