Battle Order 204

The riveting true story account of a young WW2 pilot’s heroic journey, illustrated throughout with fascinating photographs, maps and excerpts from his log books.

Seconds after the bombs had been released, Dog was hit. David was wounded in five places by flying metal. His right knee, thigh and shoulder were injured. The tendons and artery in his right hand were severed. And shrapnel ripped though his thick leather helmet, fracturing his skull.

The aircraft went into a dive.

David’s boyhood dreams of flying led him to England for months of training and preparation as a bomber pilot. But his final flight was a nightmare.

Author Christobel Mattingley tells her husband’s gripping story with remarkable restraint and compassion.

Christobel Mattingley

I was born at Brighton, South Australia, on 26th October 1931, and grew up in a little house on the sandhills by the sea. I loved swimming and playing on the beach. Then we moved to live in Sydney, New South Wales, and lived in an old house near the bush, where I learnt to know and love watching all sorts of creatures. My writing started when I was 10 in the children’s pages of a nature magazine. My sister and I always had pets and my stories are often about people who care about animals and birds.
