Calico and Tin Horns
Long ago all the Hudson River Valley belonged to a few wealthy families who, despite their promises to sell land to local farmers, forced them to be tennants and share-croppers instead. Finally the farmers rebelled.
For Hannah, younger daughter of a farm family, the trouble began when she came upon her mother sewing a blue calico garment. Blue was Hannah’s favourite colour, and she hoped her mother was making a dress for her. But Hannah’s mother quickly hid the cloth from view. Soon, though, Hannah discovered that both her father and older brother along with their neighbours were dressing themselves in calico shirts and pants, wearing leather masks and carrying rifles, declaring war against the landlords and their lawmen.
How Hannah herself was able to aid the rebellion and help save her family’s farm is told in this exciting story based on a real episode in America’s early days.
