Dad's Takeaways

It’s the holidays and Dad decides he doesn’t want to cook; instead he suggests takeaways. The children are excited: they love takeaways. As Dad and Ngaio pack the car ready to go, however, the two little boys become confused. Why do they need gloves and a frying pan, a bucket, hammer and newspaper? They drive past all the takeaway shops and past the crowded beaches, until they come to an empty beach. Dad explains that they are going to collect kaimoana to eat. They gather mussels, pippis and oysters. The boys aren’t too enthusiastic when they see the oysters but once it is all cooked, they agree with Dad and Ngaio that these are the best takeaways in the world. Dad and Ngaio also impress on them the importance of preserving this resource for future generations.
