This story gives the young reader a rare insight into the life of a young girl in India who is married at the age of 13 to a boy she has never seen and forced to live with a family she does not know. Koly’s husband dies after only a few months and she is a widow and dependent on her inlaws for food and shelter. The lack of rights for females children and women in India, the problems of homelessness and the harsh realities of the dowry system are dealt with gently but honestly as Koly courageously faces her seemingly hopeless situation.
