Parvana

Based closely on real life, this is the exciting and inspiring story of Parvana, a young girl growing up in Afghanistan, as she struggles to make a life for herself and her family under the harsh rule of the Taliban. There are many types of battle in Afghanistan. Females are not allowed to leave the house without a man and have to wear clothes that cover every part of their body. When soldiers burst into her home and drag her father off to prison, Parvana is forced to take responsibility for her whole family, dressing as a boy to make a living in the marketplace of Kabul, risking her life in the dangerous and volatile city. Exciting and touching, Parvana is a story of courage in the face of extreme fear and repression. Author Deborah Ellis has been to Afghan refugee camps and heard many stories like Parvana’s. The royalties from this book will be donated to Women for Women in Afghanistan, dedicated to the education of Afghan girls in refugee camps in Pakistan. Ages 11+
