Problem Child

Problem Child is another book about bullying, but this one has a significant difference from most others – it’s told from the bully’s point of view.
Max Quigley and his best mate Jared form the most intimidating team in the school. Jared’s the physical enforcer, while Max is the persuader, the “brains” of the operation, or so he believes. He manages to justify his behaviour as no more than observing the obvious shortcomings of the weaker students, then pointing those weaknesses out, mostly to them, often to others as well.

Max’s chief target is Triffin Nordstrom, the quiet bookish kid with the slightly odd mother. Triffin becomes the victim of a series of atrocities by Max, until in a final attempt by their parents to sort it out, they’re thrown together against their will, in an experimental solution to their conflict.

Over time, and despite himself, Max begins to see a different, more interesting side of Triffin, and he’s forced to concede that perhaps he hasn’t always been as fair as he should. But they’ll still never be friends – there’s far too much history between them for that to ever happen. Besides, they’re just too different. But Max’s biggest test is still to come.

James Roy

James Roy was born in the colony of New South Wales and was transported to the South Pacific as a young child, where he was raised by a family of kind-hearted missionaries. He managed to keep insanity at bay by storing his memories in a notebook, until such time as he was able to find his way back to New South Wales with the aid of a one-armed-fishing boat captain. Then, plagued by health, he turned to writing books for solace. He soon became known as a writer of high esteem, his first great success coming with Captain Mack, which won Honour Book in the 2000 Children’s Book Council Awards, and A Boat for Bridget, a Notable book in the same awards. He now lives in the Blue Mountains, and would be a recluse were if not for his wife, daughters, dog and sundry associates, whom he sees regularly. Ichabod Hart and the Lighthouse Mystery is his sixth book for young people
