Sam Sullivan's Scooter

Some children have bikes, some have skateboards, some have roller blades, but the three Sullivan brothers (dreamy Simon, bossy Sebby and curious Sam) have scooters. Not the trendy sort that fold up and go in your schoolbag, but the big heavy kind your mum and dad had when they were young. The boys’ dad restores them until they are as good as new.
When Sam Sullivan is given his scooter, he can’t wait to ride it. But one thing still isn’t quite finished: the handlebars are hollow, and Mum can’t find any corks to plug them with. Ever curious, Sam wonders what it would be like to stick his fingers in the handlebars. Despite Mum’s dire warnings, he can’t resist.

Sam’s fingers get stuck. Badly stuck. No matter what he does, he can’t get them out. Mum can’t get them out either. Sam’s scooter is stuck to him like a big heavy twin that he has to lug with him wherever he goes. And then the worst thing of all happens. Sam needs to go to the toilet …

Jane Godwin

Jane Godwin’s highly acclaimed picture book Dreaming of Antarctica was published in 1997 with illustrations by Terry Denton. Penguin has also published Sebby, Stee, the Garbos and Me (illustrated by award-winning Andrew McLean) in its popular Aussie Bites series and Poor Fish and When Anna Slept Over in the Aussie Nibbles series. Sebby, Stee, the Garbos and Me was shortlisted for the 1999 NSW State Literary Award for Book of the Year; and the 2000 YABBA (Younger readers). The Family Tree, Jane’s second novel, was shortlisted for the 1999 Family Award for Children’s Books, the 2000 WAYRA and won the 2000 Queensland Premier’s Literary Award (Children’s Books).
