Shady, the River Red Gum

Shady is a river red gum tree growing by a creek in the Australian bush. Shady is home to a host of native wildlife—birds, animals and insects that come and go from Shady’s branches each day.
Through bold, hand printed linocut illustrations and simple factual text, young readers are introduced to each of these animals one by one. The story invites interactive engagement, encouraging children to observe, name and connect with the natural world around them. Together these creatures form a lively ecosystem centred around the tree, highlighting the importance of community in nature.
The book aims to foster curiosity, recognition and appreciation for native Australian flora and fauna while nurturing a deeper relationship between children and their local environment.
