Formerly part of Czechoslovakia, Slovakia became its own country in 1993 and joined the EU in 2004. It has a population of more than 5 million. Its ethnic groups include: Slovak 85.8 per cent, Hungarian 9.7 per cent, Roma 1.7 per cent, Ruthenian/Ukrainian 1 per cent, and others and unspecified 1.8 per cent. Its exports cover: vehicles, machinery and electrical equipment, base metals, chemicals and minerals, and plastics. Its EU export partners include: Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, Poland, and Hungary. Its imports include: machinery and transport equipment, intermediate manufactured goods, fuels, chemicals, and miscellaneous manufactured goods.
