Tell Me a Picture

In 2001, Quentin Blake – the first Children’s Laureate – chose twenty-six of his favourite paintings for an exhibition at the National Gallery.

Very different artworks were chosen, some by fine artists and some by children’s illustrators, but they all had one thing in common: a story to tell. The accompanying book urges children to use their imaginations and look for the stories in the pictures. Reissued with a new introduction from the author, Tell Me A Picture will show a new generation the adventures that await in looking at art.’

The questions asked by Quentin Blake’s lovable characters will prompt children to ask their own questions when looking at paintings. This book makes fine art and illustration accessible by helping children look for stories in the pictures.
Chosen and curated by Quentin Blake, one of Britain’s best-loved authors, and includes pictures by artists as diverse as Edward Hopper, Paula Rego, Francisco de Goya and John Burningham.

Quentin Blake

Quentin Blake has been drawing ever since he can remember and has always made his living as an illustrator. He has also taught, and for eight years was Head of the Illustration department at the Royal College of Art. Quentin Blake was made an OBE in 1988 and, in the words of The Guardian, was “already a national institution” when he was appointed the first Children’s Laureate in 1999.
