Becky has a new next-door neighbour, Midge, and immediately she invites her over to her house to pay cubbies. Midge, a very neat and proper child, isn’t terribly eager to play: she is more interested in Becky’s little brother, Ed. Becky’s blanket cubby falls apart, but Becky is determined to try again next day. She tries making a cubby from an old tent, and then with mud bricks. Nothing works, and the new friendship wanes. Then one day Midge asks Becky and Ed to her place. She has been given a cubby just like a real little house, with a doorknocker and furniture and even a pretend oven and a pretend television. But Becky sees something else as well: the big cardboard boxes the new cubby came in. And now Becky has a wonderful idea …
