The Runaway Dinner

Banjo is a very hungry little boy who every evening has a sausage for his dinner. On his own little plate, with his own little knife and fork, at his own little table and chair. But one day his sausage, called Melvin, jumps off the plate and races down the road, and everything else follows – peas, French fries, carrots, fork and knife, table and chair – with Banjo bringing up the rear!

Allan Ahlberg

In the early 1960s, Allan studied teacher training in Sunderland, where he also met Janet, his future wife. He had tackled a wide variety of jobs, ranging from postman to plumber’s mate before working as a primary teacher for ten years. Janet, however, discovering that she ‘couldn’t do the policing job’, went on to study graphic design, which led her to her vocation as an illustrator.
