The San of Africa

The San are an ancient African group – they have lived in southern Africa for many thousands of years. The San have always been a peaceful people. They have lived in harmony with animals and the environment. They have recorded their history by painting on rock walls and telling vivid folktales. In earlier eras, the San roamed throughout the deserts, grasslands, and coastlines of southern Africa, gathering wild plants and following the animals they hunted.
In recent centuries, life has changed greatly for the San. Over the years, southern African has seen many transitions: white settlers have arrived from Europe, big cities have been built where the land was once wild, and the region has witnessed many struggles. Through all the changes, it has been difficult for the San to hold onto their ancient ways – yet they survive and try to maintain their age-old customs. The San of Africa describes how the San are struggling to keep alive their rich culture within the fast-paced modern world.
