The Shopping Expedition

By Andre Amstutz · Illustrated by Allan Ahlberg About

A wonderful flight of the imagination in which an ordinary trip to the shops becomes an intrepid adventure. Come shopping with me and Mum and little Harry and Wilf the Wonderdog. But this is no ordinary shopping trip; the car breaks down, the rain keeps coming and the road becomes a jungle, then a river… It’s an expedition where anything might
happen; in fact, it probably will!

Allan Ahlberg

In the early 1960s, Allan studied teacher training in Sunderland, where he also met Janet, his future wife. He had tackled a wide variety of jobs, ranging from postman to plumber’s mate before working as a primary teacher for ten years. Janet, however, discovering that she ‘couldn’t do the policing job’, went on to study graphic design, which led her to her vocation as an illustrator.
