Tim and Tig
For his birthday, Aunt Ethel gives Tim a kitten. A very large kitten. Tim loves its orange and black stripes, its big floppy paws, and its rope of a tale. He calls it Tig. Aunt Ethel warns Tim not to feed the kitten any meat: ‘Dry cat food is best,’ she says. But Tim’s parents know what a growing kitten needs, and as soon as Aunt Ethel has gone home his mum gives Tig a dish of raw meat. In three months’ time, Tig is as big as a pony, he’s biting the legs off chairs, and the house looks like the local tip. Tim and his mum and dad are very proud of their pet, and Tim loves to take him for walks. Tig even cleans up at the Cat Show and the school’s Pets’ Day! When the Mayor arrives at their home to accuse them of harbouring a dangerous animal, the family can’t believe their ears. Surely their beloved pussy cat can’t really be – a tiger? What will they do now?
