Witch and Wizard

Belief in the power of magic reaches far back in time, when magic-makers gained power and status by appearing to control the supernatural forces responsible for ensuring fertility, health, and good fortune. Wise men and women discovered the healing powers of wild herbs to cure the sick – a skill which was considered magical. Whatever their origins and appearance, from grizzled old crone to chanting tribal sorcerer, such people have always inspired fear and respect in their communities.Witch Wizard brings to life the rites, beliefs, and tools of magic-makers around the world, from the ancient civilizations to tribal peoples today. A catalogue of famous witches and wizards of the past, and of fiction, is presented alongside those unfortunate men and women, like the witches of salem, who were hounded and executed in the witch-hunts. Written by Douglas Hill, a children’s fictions author and also an expert on magic, superstition, and things supernatural, Witch Wizard introduces the reader to the enchanted world of magic and magic-makers past and present.
