Kevin the Troll
A wicked comedy fantasy about a troll called Kevin and his clashes with the people of Farchbarden, a town in coastal Sweden. There are many permutations to the plot but the main narrative concerns Captain Esben Boysenberger’s search for his wife, Viola. Kevin kidnapped Viola ten years before the story begins. She is under a spell and believes she is a troll, married to Kevin. When Captain Boysenberger discovers the truth, he tries to rescue her from the scary island of Garten. The trolls capture Boysenberger and plan to sacrifice him to the volcano god, but Boysenberger’s son Bork, and his cousins Inga and Karl have other plans. Along the way, there are dramatic rescues via a whinny golem made of chocolate, an army of ghosts, not-so-clever peasants and troll birthday parties in caves where they plan to eat people. It all ends happily and satisfactorily, with Doug’s usual sly asides. A clever twist on fairy tales…
