Krakatoa Lighthouse

The Javanese seaside fishing village of Anjer is warm and fragrant. A constant flow of traders and other visitors from all over the world keeps it prosperous and vibrant.
So what could be better than being the twelve-year-old son of Anjer’s Javanese lighthouse keeper?

But the year is 1883, and the conical-shaped peak on the horizon that has started to rumble and give off smoke is Krakatoa – set to explode in the most dramatic way, generating the loudest sound ever historically reported, that people as far away as Perth could clearly hear, and tsunamis up to 46 metres high. Tidal gauges as far away as the English Channel registered the event.

Who in Anjer can hope to survive the cataclysm? And even those who do will find their lives altered forever.

Allan Baillie has based his story on the real-life events of the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, sticking closely to the facts and chronology, and including real characters among his fictional ones, to create a powerful story of survival, loss and, ultimately, inspirational hope among the ashes.
